4. Linaria vulgaris - butterandeggs toadflax
5. Ruttex crispu_s - cisly dock
6. Thlaspi arvensis -field pennycress
These species are neither ooae:on nor widespread on the study area as
evidenced by the fact that none appeared in the 242 cover and production
quadrats sampled during the vegetation stixiy (Appendix B). Canada thistle
was occasionally found to be gracing near wet areas (drainages, ponds)
while field pennycress and quackgrass were encountered occasionally on
other disturbed sites.
SII~II[&N INDICA`LbR PT_ANZ'S
Only one primary selenium obligate or indicator plant (i.e., requires
seleniwn for proper growth and is found only where there is seleniun in
the soil) was encountered during vegetation investigations at Seneca II
Mine:
1. Aster xylorrhiza - romROn wvodyaster
Secondary selenium absorbers are not limited to soils containing seleniian
but may accinmilate seleniian when gracing in seleniferous soils, haver,
all other conditions equal, they grow just as well on soils contav^ing
no selenium. Secondary selenium absorbers encountered during vegetation
studies at Seneca II were:
1. Aster spp. - aster
2. Castilleja spp. - paintbrush
3. Pensterron spp. - penstemon
4. Grindelia squarrosa - curlycup gunaceed
~•
-26-
