2
It is also recommended that Crested wheatgrass, proposed by the applicant, not be used for the
temporary seeding of the stockpiles but instead use Luna pubescent wheatgrass and/or Amur
intermediate wheatgrass, both of which will establish readily and quickly. This temporary
seeding should be done at a rate of 15 total pounds PLS per acre.
The topsoil and overburden stockpiles should be graded with fmal slopes no steeper than 4H:1 V.
Slopes that are less steep allow easier maintenance, are less susceptible to water erosion and
more readily establish grass protective cover.
The application states that topsoil removed from the site will be treated with along-term residual
pre-emergent orpost-emergent herbicide to reduce noxious weeds. The grasses recommended
for temporary re-vegetation of the topsoil stockpiles may be negatively affected by certain
herbicides. It is recommended that the applicant coordinate weed treatment plans with Kelly
iJhing with the Adams County Cooperative Extension and closely follow herbicide label
instructions to avoid problems.
Reclamation Re-Vegetation
Limited information was provided in the application relative to site reclamation plans. It is
recommended that topsoil (applicant proposes a total of one foot over all reclaimed azeas) be
spread over all areas to be re-vegetated in lifts not to exceed 4 inches and worked into the slopes
to ensure good adhesion and to minimize soil creep. In order to re-establish normal levels of
microbial activity in the soil, compost at the rate of one cubic Yazd per 1000 ft2 shouldbe mixed
with the soil. If compost is not applied, after topsoil replacement and before grass seeding, the
soil should be tested to determine the need for additional fertilizer. Recommended grass seeding
dates are from November 1 ~` through Apri130t°; seeding should be done in unfrozen soil. A
good quality grass seed drill with an agitator and press wheels is recommended.
The following native grass seed mix and application rate is recommended for re-vegetation in the
soil types found in the mine area, and are based on NRCS "critical azea" seeding rates that are
double our normal rates.
Common Name 100%
PLS/Acre % in Mix Total LBS of
PLS needed
per acre
Western wheat rass Arriba, Barton 16.0 30 4.8
Switchgrass Blackwell) 10.0 20 2.0
Bi bluestem i<aw 11.0 15 1.7
Green needle rass Lodorm 10.0 15 1.5
Blue rams Hachita, Lovin tort) 3.0 10 0.3
Sideoats rams au hn, Butte 9.0 10 1.0
Total 100% 11.3
Note: If seed is broadcast, rewmmended rate should be
doubled.
