EXHIBIT 7 - VEGETATION INFORMATION
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
• ?.0. T?ox 363, Salida, Colorado 31201
April 19, 1977
?;r. ;eorge Theoto:<atos
9utala Construction company
7625 `~.s. xwy. 50
Salida, Colorado 31201
dear 's. Theotokatos:
Since I received your request on April 12th, T have lootced at
the ,•ravel pit area. Also, I have researched the information
~ertainin; to this site in the Chaffee-Lake soil survey :manuscript.
As you 'mow, the undisturbed soil type on this property is the
Dominson gravelly sandy loam, 1 to 9 percent slopes. It is described
on pave 14 of the manuscript. ;e term the land capability classification
of this soil as `/Ie-1 ,when irrigated and '/Ie-3 in its dryland or ranee
condition. These capability classifications are dealt with in consider-
able detail on ~a;es 37 and 33 of the manuscript. ;Je call the native
vegetation on this soil a Or; "Iountain Outwash ran ;e site. This
vegetative type is described on page !a2 of the soil survey writeup.
• `!our future reclamation efforts on this ~r3vc1 pit iri.ll, of course,
be rather limited because of the lack of irrigation *.aai,er for this
property. Also, the low precipitation in this area and the stony nature
of the subsoil will £urthr.r limit ,your choices. If yo^ renluce as much
of the overburden as possible, I think ,you could do so,ne ;pod wit'r. a
dryland grass seedin;. I£ you would haul in some topsoil, as you
:mentioned, the seeding would have a better chance of survival.
I recommend that ,you consider any one of four adapted plants for
such a planting. Three of them are Grasses: Indian ricegrass, sand
dropseed and crested wheatgrass. ,^he other plant which is a legu.•ne is
yelloo-rblosso... sweetclove^. the seed could ~e broadcast on those areas
iihich ?:ave a little bit of topsoil, at leapt. 12me best time to plant
would ?rooably be in .July i~then •,ue can normally expect some summer shos~ers.
1e have seedin,- rates for all these plants iF you want this information.
I cant really think of much else in the line of ve;e~ative
reclamation which would be pract_cal on you° ;ravel fit area.
Ii' you have any questions, ?lease c~on~t+a~/ct~me.
~ayno .I.
