FIGURE 2.06.5-1
Sr. Environmental Engineer!
Land Manager
PH: (970)824-1579
Fax: (970)824-1598
December 7, 2006
Ms. Jennifer Maiolo
Little Snake Office
Bureau of Land Management
455 Emerson
Craig, Colorado 8!625
RE: Colowyo Mine C-1981-019, Revision No PR-02
Request for Variance from Approximate Original Contour
• Dear Ms. Maiolo,
Colowyo Coal Company, L.P. is revising the current permit boundary with the addition of approximately
6,050 acres. This expansion area will include the South Taylor mining area which is located adjacent to
the southern extent of the current mining operation. As part of this expansion, Colowyo is requesting a
variance from approximate original contour for steep slope mining. According to Colowyo's records, the
Bureau of Land Management owns portions of Sections 17 through 22 and 28 through 30. These areas
will be affected by the mining operation and are shown on the attached post-mining topography Map 19B.
A ntap of the pre-mining topography and pre- and post-mining topography cross-sections are also attached
as Maps 18A and 20B, respectively.
The variance from approximate original contoue will allow an increase in forage, decrease erosion, and
modulate surface-water runoff. This will create a habitat more suitable to grazing and wildlife and will be
essential for achieving apost-mining use of rangeland. Please respond to this letter in writing with your
opinion as to whether this variance should be approved.
Please call me with any questions or if you desire additional information at the above phone number.
"fhank you for your assistance with this matter.
Sincerely,
Tay~~'`-_`~
Senior Environmental Engineer/
Land Manager
• Encl. -Map 18A, Pre-Mining Topography
Map ] 9B, Post-Mining Topography
Map 20B, Pl'e and Post-Mining Topography Cross-Sections
Colowyo \line • 5731 Stale Eiithway 13 • Meekrr, Gitondo 81641
F+1 970 R24 lSnO • F+t 470 R24 1504 • www.nea.mnt
