A site inspection was done by DWM Lonnie Brown. The site
is located on prairie rangeland located to the south and above the river bottom (riparian) area. The primary
vegetation type is prairie species of grasses, cacti, and small shrubs. Wildlife in the area includes prairie bird
species, reptiles, small mammals, pronghorn, and deer. There are no known prairie dog colonies or T&E species.
Initial wildlife impacts will be localized and minor.
The proposed plan is for a long term operation on approximately 306 acres. The plan states that the operation
could impact the land in 30 acre increments for 3 to 10 years over a total period of up to 60 years. Wildlife
populations and habitat conditions can change in varying degrees over this long period of time. It is therefore
recommended that the plan be reviewed and the site re-evaluated before work is begun on each successive 30 acre
- tract.
Of growing concern to the Division of Wildlife is the potential for the encroachment of noxious weeds to disturbed
like this proposed gravel pit. It is the recommendation of the DOW that the disturbed area be routinely and closely
monitored for the detection of any noxious weeds. This would include tamarisk which was found by DWM Brown
during the site inspection A eradication plan should be in place to control any noxious weed growth.
Thank you for the opportunity to comm nit on this gravel pit proposal. If you have questions, please call DWM
Lonnie Brown at 719-989-1027, or AWM AI Trujillo at 719-250-2244.
'ncerely,
A Trujillo
Area Wil anager
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Hams D.
