In order to consider all shrub est at~l ishment technologies, concentrated seeding of shrubs
is included as an additional method to be used for establishment of shrub islands or
patches. This will be used in addition to [he mechanical or hand planting of seedling:. in
concentrated areas described later. The shrub seeding sites will receive approximately
0.5 feet of topsoil and will be deep ripped to a depth of 1.5 feet. Seed Nix No. 5 (TZ~ble
22-7) lists the shrub species considered for seeding in these areas. AIL species are
native to the mine permit area. The seed will be broadcast on a roughened seedbed
prepared by disking. Disking will be conducted to suppress volunteer species present in
the replaced topsoil. If the soils are not excessively rocky, the site may be harrowed to
aid in lightly covering the seed. If harrowing is not possible, seeding of these sites
should be delayed as late in the seeding season as practical. This will allow the
anticipated snow cover and freezing and thawing to aid in covering the broadcast seed.
Drill seeding will be considered as an optional seeding method when applying this mix.
The shrub seeding areas will not be seeded with the permanent mi.x. The shrub, seeded
areas will be approximately one to two acres in size and will generally be located on
north aspects or areas which may receive run-on moisture such as depressions or swal es.
The small relative size and scattering of the sites will reduce erosion potential in these
areas of low herbaceous cover. On a per acre basis, this method of establishing shrub:: is
estimated to be as much as eight times less expensive than the planting of seedlings;
however, its effettivensss can 6e variable. If monitoring indicates a greater level of
success in seeded versus planted areas, the seeding of concentrated shrub areas uill
become the preferred shrub establishment method on remaining upland sites after CDMG
consultation end approval.
SABLE 22-7
Seed Mix No. 5 - Concentrated Shrub Seeding Areas
Seeding Rate
P.L.S.
•
•
z~
Species lbs/Acre Seeds/Ft.
Amelenthier elnifolie Saskatoon serviceberry 6.00 6.U
Amelanchier utahensis or Utah serviceberry or 6.00 6.0
Seri ohidium vasevanum Mt. big sagebrush 0.25 10.0
Padus virwiniana melanocerpa
Svmohoricaroos rotundifotius
Purshie tridentate
Chokecherry
Mt. snowberry
Antelope bitterbrush
TOTAL
7.00 0.8
5.00 8.5
3.00 t_1
21.25 26.4
•
1B Revised 06!19/95
