• EXHIBIT D - SOILS INFORMATION
The dominant soils mapping unit found on the CM-25 lease
tract is Unit 3, described as "rock outcrop and very
shallow soils of the canyons." It is the most extensive
mapping unit of the Dolores River Basin, constituting
approximately one-third of the area.
A typical landscape is characterized by the deep sandstone
canyons with steep slopes (from 25-100%) and long narrow
valleys. The dominant parent material for these soils
is sandstone with some shale and alluvium.
This mapping unit can be divided into three general
components. Rock outcrops account for about 45 percent
of the unit. These are largely of sandstone, with some
small shale outcrops. About half of the unit (49%) is in
shallow (20 inches or less) and stoney soils, generally
with a light-colored, loamy surface layer. Mixed alluvial
soils of the Dolores River and San Miguel River bottoms
account for about 6 percent of the mapping unit.
The following 1966 Great Groups, Subgroups, or land
types are found in this mapping unit:
• PERCENT OF
MAPPING UNIT
45
25
20
4
4
2
GROUP
Rock outcrops
Haplustolls
Torriorthents
Lithic Argiustolls
Boralfs and Cryobarolls
Torrifluvents
In most areas mapped as Unit 3, the mean annual temperature
falls between 42 degrees Fahrenheit and 52 degrees
Fahrenheit, with a frost-free period of between 100 and
160 days. Sheet erosion is described as moderate. Sediment
yield is estimated at less than 0.2 to 1.0 acre-feet per
square mile per year.
The dominant land use of Mapping Unit 3 is for range and
wildlife. Of the 974,000 acres it covers in the Dolores
River Basin, 3800 acres are in irrigated cropland and
there is no dry cropland.
The dominant ground cover associated with I.4apping Unit 3
is pinyon-juniper. At higher elevations oakbrush, service-
berry, and grass are more prevalent, while willows and
cottonwoods may be found along the narrow valleys.
.
