utilized to evaluate diversity. Tables 2.4-39 through 2.4-42 indicates cover
values for affected and reference areas of the two vegetation types. Table
2.4-43 summarizes the species which contribute relative cover greater than or
equal to 4$.
EVALUATION OF DIVERSITY - PREVIOUS MINED AREAS
On August 26, 1981, fifteen transects xere sampled on the West Ridge
area. Each transect was 50 meters in length and was sampled at 5 meter
intervals by means of a 10-point frame set at an angle of 45 degrees. Cover
xas measured as first hit only for each pin, with 100 hits possible per
transect.
Sample adequacy wes determined by the equation:
_ t2s2
• M (d a)2
Where: M = Minimum number of observations needed
t = A table value 1.645
s = Standard Deviation
z = The mean
For the fifteen observations (transects) taken on West Ridge, the mean
(x) xas 4.07 and the standard deviation(s) was 10.35. The minimum number of
observations needed was 13. A summary of the cover data transects is
presented in Table 2.4-44.
. In determining the percent contribution to diversity for each species,
the Shannon Indez was used:
n n.
• H -E N1 loge N1
Revised 11/84 2.4-lla
