• Cover data were obtained using the same procedure as for the affected <br />area, with the exception that the transects were located within the control <br />area. <br />Stands of shrubs and trees were sampled in the vicinity of exclosures <br />using the angle-order method (Strickler and Sterns 1962). Sample points were <br />located at 10-meter intervals along randomly located 100-meter transects. <br />Data collected included distance from sampling points to the third nearest <br />shrub or tree, species indent ification, diameter at breast height (for trees) <br />and shrub and tree height. <br />Adequacy was calculated by using the following formula, with the <br />exception that a two-stage sampling technique was utilized for determining <br />• variance (see Cochran 1977, Chapter 10) for those vegetation types which were <br />sampled by the two-stage <br />• <br />2.4-10a November 9,1990 <br />
