include shale derived soils that ere fine textured end have a potential for saline/alkaline
• soil Conditions. Wet soil Conditions ere also likely to be encountered in Dry Creek or
areas of poor drainage. The mix contains species that are adapted to these varying site
characteristics and ere able to provide long-term stability. Tall statured species such as
basin wildrye and fourwing saltbush will provide structural diversity. Eleven out of the
twelve species are natives with the majority native to the region. The composition of the
mix will ensure a return of productivity and utility levels necessary to meet the postmining
land uses.
Seed Mix No. 4 (Table 20-4) is a temporary stabilization mix to be used for temporary
reclamation of temporary disturbances in place more than one year. Temporary disturbances
in place less than a year will be seeded to a cover of barley or winter wheat.
The four seed mixes contain the following introduced species:
Intermediate wheatgrass
Russian wildrye
Alfalfa
Redtop
• Meadow brome
Urehardgress
Timothy
These species are desirable end necessary to achieve the postmining land uses end ere
compatible with plant and animal species of the region. The species are well documented in
e variety of technical literature and have proven performance in meeting similar land uses
or reclamation goals. The species are not poisonous or noxious.
Shrub and tree plantings are not planned in any reclaimed area. The majority of the
reclaimed sites will be reclaimed to the two types of pasture. The remaining native
reclaimed areas ere smaller in areal extent end are, for the most part, narrow in width.
The proximity of adjacent native shrub communities and the limited surface disturbances will
allow for reinvasion of shrubs in a relatively short ecological time frame. Fourwing
saltbush has been included in the mix to encourage establishment of shrubs in the interim.
Seedinc Methods. Seeding of the permanent seed mixes will be carried out during the first
available planting season after topsoil distribution end seedbed preparation. Spring
• 3
