• 2) The total acreage of the irrigated pastureland being considered for production yield will be
measured and one sample will be taken for every four acres of field. For example, if the
study area has 60 acres total, 15 samples will be taken. If the acreage is less than 60
acres, then a minimum of 15 samples will be taken.
3) Once the number of sample points is determined, a random number generator such as the
one provided in the QuattroPro Spreadsheet Program, will be run. The random number
generator will use the total numberof 50 Foot by 50 foot block numbers generated in step
1 of this procedure and the numberof sample points required from step 2 ofthis procedure.
4) All randomly selected sample blocks from step 3, will be located in the field by standard
surveying methods. After the 50 x 50 foot sample block is Feld staked, a 3 foot x 3 foot
sample grid square will be tossed over the back of the samplers head to determine the final
sample grid to be cut and collected. The vegetation within the 3 x 3 foot sample grid will be
clipped as close to the ground as practical and gathered and air dried for 96 hours to
simulate field hay drying, before it is weighed and the yield per acre is calculated. The
results from all 3 x 3 foot sample points will be mathematically averaged.
•
5) The data will be evaluated for sampling adequacy using the following formula:
Nmin = ~(ta + tp)2 ~ (SZ)1/(dQ)2
where:
Nm;° =minimum numberof sampling grids to achieve sampling adequacy.
s =sample standard deviation
O = 90% of technical standard
t° =the (a=.10) t table value for a single tailed t-test with (n-1) degrees
of freedom
tp =the (a = .25) t table value for a single tailed t-test
d = desired level of reduction about the sample mean (0.10 for 90%
confidence)
6) WFC reserves the option to measure vegetation production by the old fashioned
method, which is, cut, bale, weigh and count bales.
.
