2.05.4 (2)(e)
•
t'J
I'IT?ODUCTI ON
SI~:r.'D MIXiUitE
Preliminary seed mixtures were recommended
on the basis of the vegetation survey and plot studies in 1978. 'This seed
mixture is herewith revised to account for extended results of plot studies
completed in 1979 and 1980. The reasons for revision are as follows:
(1) to increase seeding rates, especially of prairie sandreed, which has
been difficult to establish, (2) to increase species diversity.by adding
other species that have been successful on test plots, especially the
cool-season grasses, which have been most effective in controlling reedy
annuals, (3) to delete the native forbs whitestem mentzelia (a weedy annual)
and four o'clock (for which we could not successfully collect seed), and
(4) to add bractless stickleaf {which is the most desirable native forb
and the only one for which seed can be collected readily) and sandsage {the
seed of which can be collected on site) directly to the seed mixture.
SSL'D MIXTURE

~ecies YIS in p
Old rate ounds/acre
New rate
Goshen prairie sandreed .. .. ....................
~
~ 1.8 3.0
Elida (or Carden county)
sand
bluestem ................ 1.6 2.0
Covington blue grams .................................. 0.25 0.5
Arriba western wheatgrass ............................. 1.6 2.0
Sand dropseed ......................................... 0.01 0.05
Paloma Indian ricegrass ............................... 0.2 0.2
Vaughn sideoats grams ................................. 0.3 0.3
Pastures little bluestem ............................... 0.2 0.2
Critana thickspike wheatgrass ......................... --- 1.0
Switchgrass ........................................... --- 0.1
Giant dropseed ........................................ --- 0.02
Travois alfalfa ....................................... --- 0.1
Lincoln smooth brume .................................. --- 0.2
Luna pubscent wheatgrass .............................. --- 0.2
Nordan crested wheatgrass ............................. --- 0.2
Russian wildrye ... ...................................
• --- 0.2
Hractless stickleaf
........ ........................... --- ?
Sandsage .............................................. ---
Total 5.9b 10.27

All species to be included in the mixture of seed to be planted by drilling,
except the two dmpseeds, which will be held separate a nd planted by
broadcasting.
Seed of bractless stickleaf and sandsage will be collected annually from
about September 15 to November 1. Because bractless stickleaf is eaten
by cattle and •-oduces no seed where grazing is permitted, it rill be
collected on u ,razed fields and roadsides. Seeding rates for these two
may vary accorurng to experience and collecting success.
