NON-IRRIGATED PLOT"
the non-irrigated plots included both seeded and undisturbed plots.
Those seeded were mulched with either straw or manure at if tons~acra, and
the undisturbed plots provide a small reference azea of native vegetation
where the sand sage was reduced first by moxing and secondly by spraying
xith an herbicide. Herbaceous cover xas sampled September 6, 1978, and
July 25, 1979. with results as follows for perennial species:
Year Straw Manure Native
1978 z 3 20
1979 2 2 12
In addition to the cover of perennial species, the seeded plots had an
average of 10~ cover of annual species and the native of ,just ?,'~. These
data shox seeding failure without irrigation; although ue believe that
cool-season grasses such as smooth bromegrass and crested uheatgrass could
be established quite consistently by drilling into prepared seedbeds in
March. 'darn-season grasses (especially prairie sandreed, sand bluestem
and blue grams) are the most important native grasses to be established
after mining.
(~
•
9
