The first extended from May 29 to June 20, and the second
from"June 26 to July 25. Both of those dry periods xere long enough to
reveal droughty responses on compacted sand; whereas, the overall favorable
moisture permitted much greater than normal plant growth and production.
In 1980, dry periods occurred from May 16 to July 2 and from July 4
to August 2$ (and still later but not verified). Both of these dry periods
xere long enou~ to again reveal drought responses on compacted sand.
Plant growth and herbaceous cover were considerably less than in 1979.
2
