37
Osgood Series

•
TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION: Loamy, mixed, mesic Arentic
Ustollic Raplargids.
The Osgood soil as mapped in the study area is des-
cribed as a "variant" of the typical Osgood series. The
typical Osgood soil as mapped in the south Weld County
soil survey has a thicker and finer textured subsoil than
the Osgood variant as mapped in the Study Area. As mapped
they consist of deep, well-drained soils that formed in
wind-laid sands. They occur on smooth plains that have
slopes of 0 to 3 percent.
Osgood soils are usually adjacent to or near Valent
soils which do not have a B horizon.
Profile description of Osgood sand, variant, 0 to
3 percent slope, as obtained on the study area (3400 feet
west and 100 feet south of the northeast corner of
Sec. 36, T.3N., R.64W.). (Site #1 on soil map.)
All -- 0 to 5 inches; brown (lOYR 5/2) sand, dark grayish
brown (lOYR 4/2); moist; single-grained; loose;
neutral; gradual smooth boundary.
A12 -- 5 to 18 inches, brown (lOYR 5/3) sand, dark grayish
brown (lOYR 4/2) moist; single-grained; loose;
neutral; gradual wavy boundary.
A3 -- 18 to 32 inches; brown (lOYR 5/3) sand, dark brown
(lOYR 4/3) moist; single-grained; hard when dry,
friable when moist; neutral; gradual smooth
boundary.
B&A -- 32 to 44 inches; brown (lOYR S/3) sand, dark brown
(lOYR 4/3) moist; massive; hard when dry, friable
moist; neutral; clear smooth boundary.
B2t -- 44 to 49 inches, brown (lOYR 5/3) loamy sand; dark
brown (lOYR 4/3) moist; moderate coarse prismatic.
parting to moderate medium subangular blocky
structure; hard, friable; neutral; clear irregular
boundary.
C -- 44 to 60 inches; pale brown (lOYR 6/31 loamy sand,
brown (lOYR 5/3) moist; massive; slightly hard
dry, very friable moist; slightly alkaline.
