• INTRODUCTION
Between July 21 and 25, 1992, the North Thompson Creek mine site (Permit C-
8]-025) and its associated undisturbed area were visited and sampled in compliance
with Rules 2.04.10 and 4.15. The former mine area is located within Sections 34 and
35 of T 8 S, R 89 W, 6th P. M. near Carbondale in Pitkin County. The reclaimed
areas lie between 7500 and 7700 feet elevation, while the adjacent undisturbed area lies
between 7600 and 8100 feet elevation. Sampling was performed to determine if
vegetation on reclaimed areas was in adequate condition to warrant Phase II bond
release consideration. Total vegetative cover was estimated on both the reclaimed mine
surfaces and the adjacent undisturbed area within the permit area. This undisturbed
mountain shrubland -dry phase area is proposed as an extended reference area. The
• reclaimed areas were sampled last year (see North Thompson Creek Mine Site_ Permit
Number C-81-025. VeEetation Monitoring Ret>9rt_ SeptEmber_ 1991). The three
reclaimed areas identified during 1991 sampling (the Refuse Area, the Number 1 Mine
Area, and the Number 3 Mine Area,) were sampled as one unit. Woody stem density
was also examined on the reclaimed areas, though the data was not collected to
adequacy. Sampling was carried out by Matthew S. Hayes of Hayes Environmental
Services.
J
I
