• main vegetation strata (trees, shrubs, herbs). Column A lists basic first hit results as
listed in Table 3. Column B identifies what first hit data would indicate if trees were
excluded from consideration. Column C identifies the results if both tree and shrub
strata were excluded and only herbaceous species counted toward the cover standard.
The results underscore what was obvious in Table 3: shrubs dominate the cover data
and the herbaceous strata is very sparse.
Sample Adequacy Calculations:
Calculations were carried out for total vegetative cover and aze included in the
appendix (Table 5). The sample adequacy formula that was used is the same as that on
page 15 of the Division's Vegetation Guidelines.
•
Both areas were sampled to adequacy for cover. As shown in Table 5, the number
of samples collected was greater than the calculated sample adequacy number. The
number of transects sampled in the reclaimed area, 16, was larger than the sample
adequacy calculation of 13.6. Similarly for the reference, 22 exceeded the calculated
value of 20.9. Sample adequacy was not attained for the woody plant data, though this
was not the emphasis of the present study. Woody stem density data were simply
collected to estimate the present site status and is only viewed as monitoring data.
Sample adequacy after 16 quadrats was 287.1 for the 50 square meter plots and 345.6
for the 100 square meter plow (unexpectedly indicating that more of the larger quadrats
would be required for adequacy).
C~
8
