There were three mineral, axploration test pits dug by Mr.
Stone under the oversize of a BLM archaeologist within the boundary
of site SD7'1'2020 and one at the edge of site.
2. ~ No new roads. were "cut"' nor "blade dropped', random or
otherwise, on the subject parcel. At the proposed Stone Pit site,'
a backhoa was used to access the area overload, dig the test pits,
and backfill'each disturbed site- The bucket side of the backhoe
was :.red to push the excavated mattrisl back into .the holes- At
each test pit site the•backhce.would have had to turn around,
makil•3 some ni$Yks in the soil .and disturbing the sa$ebrLSh at each
' site. It is apparent Chet sagebrush was crushed.and disturbed to
some extent both along old existing trails and overland where the
backhoe dri~.en to access the test pit sites. No blading occurred
as pare of this operation. There has been no bladinq apart from
the existing roads in the area for sevexal years- The teat pit
sites were random in lnyout and some test pits were more coupletely
filled and smoothed than others, but no::e were left open,
3. Your ®stimate of aepth and length bf each test pit agrees with '
our observations. Digging a hole of this sort with a backhoe
generally makes a trench deeper at one end than the other. 47hile
the hole is beins dug, the operator typically places the excavated .
material in a pile to one side of the trench,
4. No "Notice O€ =ntoae" was Filed with BLM, nor is a federal
Notice of Intent required for this action. However. Mr. Stone did
Eile a Land Vse Permit application with our office on'Apri1 25;
1997. After coasultatior. with our legal counsel (Solicitors), ve
notified Mr. Scone that no federal permit was required for this
particular action. General notification is required however. and
Bz.rt.took ?3r. scone's application as that notification, As you
7c71ow, there was a DLM archeologist present during excavation and.
directing the location of the teat pits is the vicinity of site
S}SZ'2020.
