Dept. of Natural Resources For a number of years I have been complaining to the of- ficials of C,F..& I Steel Corporation about the blasting at it's quarry west of the city. We have had to repair and repaint twice, the last time in 1972. We have had one broken window re- placed and now have another one. The damages and expense have already been considerable and far more than we should have to bear. Our home now needs to be repaired again. I have been out of town a great deal the last two months and was not aware until last week that C.F. & I have asked for an ex- tension of it's quarry. There has been nothing in the papers to make the public conscious of their intent except the public notices. Few people read these. I have documented some of the dates and the damage in our house and I have called the engineer in charge a number of times including Monday, October 3rd, when our house was so shaken that the tremors wakened me from my nap before I heard the blast. It started another new crack in our living room. Therefore, I strongly protest the extension of this quarry and if you are willing to send an investigator down I will welcome an appointment with him to show him the damage done to our home, the blast dates I am sure of, and the blue prints of our house which will show that this is a well constructed custom built structure de- signed by a competent and qualified architect in 1954. I believe this is of interest to all the people of Canon City as I know of others who have felt these blasts and have suffered dam- ages without knowledge of the cause, Some are as concerned as we are and believe the quarry is to blame, Furthermore, the blasting has scarred the mountains and made them unsightly from Highway 50 and the citizens of Canon City. I sincerely think a sufficient investigation will show that ar{y extension of the quarry will be detrimental to Canon City and to the state at large. Sincerely yours, /w, / ~. J hn S p Witcher)
