UTAH 84158-I19i <br />IN REPLY REFER 7'O: <br />Jerry Roblitz <br />Espey, Huston S Associates <br />7800 East Union Avenue <br />Suite 930 <br />Denver, Colorado 80237 <br />Dear Mr. Koblitz: <br />3 August 1983 <br />We have reviewed your proposed Storm King Coal Mine Project, near the base of <br />the Grand Hogback Mountain near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It appears that <br />listed endangered and threatened species, or species proposed for Listing, may <br />occur in the area of influence of this action. <br />To comply with Section 7(c) of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, <br />Federal agencies or their designees are required to obtain from the Fish and <br />Wildlife Service (FWS) information concerning any species, listed or proposed <br />to be listed, which maq be present in the area of a proposed construction <br />o~ect. Therefore, we are furnishing you the following list of species which <br />be present in the concerned area: <br />Listed <br />bald eagle <br />peregrine falcon <br />Colorado squawfish <br />humpback chub <br />Candidate <br />razorback sucker <br />Colorado River cutthroat trout <br />Ral3aeetus leucocephalus <br />Falco peregrines <br />Ptychocheilus lucius <br />Gila cypha <br />gvrauchen texanus <br />Salmo clerki pleuriticus <br />Section 7(c) also recuires the Federal agency proposing a major Federal action . <br />significantlq affecting She quality of the human environment to conduct and <br />submit to the FWS a biological assessment to determine the effects of the <br />proposal on listed and proposed species. The biological assessment shall be <br />completed vi this 180 days after the date on which initiated or a time mutually <br />agreed upon between the agency and the FWS. Before physical modification/alter- <br />nation of a major Federal action is begun the assessment must be completed. <br />If the biological assessment is not begun vi thin 90 days, this list should be <br />verified with us prior to initiation of the assessment. We do not feel that <br />ve can adequately assess the affects of the proposed action on listed and <br />~oposed species or critical habitat and proposed critical habitat without a <br />plete assessment.
