These gently sloping Shawano soil map units are not
designated prime farmland by the USDA Soil Conservation Service.
The soil moisture regime is acidic and precipitation is less than
35 cm. This land has a developed, good quality water system but
the water is of short supply aryl is not consistently (7 out of 10
years) available on an annual basis. The soil profile depth is
less than 1 meter and the pH often exceeds 7.4 for root zone hori-
zons. Although this soil temperature regime is frigid, the soil
grv~ring season is relatively short and crop selection is often
limited.
SHAVA*]O SANDY CLAY 7JYjM - UNIT #5810, 5-10$ STAPES AND SHAVAi~O
SANDY CLAY .LRAM, IZSI'ERMITTENTLY Fi,OODID -UNIT #SS10I, 5-10°
SLOPES. The soil profile depth is less than 1 meter and the pH
often exceeds 7.4 for root zone horizons. Although the soil
temperature regime is frigid, the soil gracing season is rela-
tively short and crop selection is often limited. Slope times
the "K" value yields a water erodibility factor greater than 2.0
for slopes greater than 8 percent.
SHAVATdO SANDY CLAY LOAM - UNTT #5810E, 10-20$ STAPES. This mod-
erately steep, eroded Shawano soil map unit is not designed prime
farmland by the L'SDA Soil Conservation Service. The soil occupies
landscape positions of less than 4 hectares per single tract and
occurs on slopes greater than 10 percent. The soil moisture regime
is acidic and precipitation is less than 35 cm. These moderately
steep soils are neither irrigated nor subirrigated. The soil pro-
file depth is less than 1 meter and the pH often exceeds 7.4 in
•
