Mr. Jack Vaeth _
October G, 1980
Page Two
EXHIBIT C
i. The outlines of the pits on the map should reflect the acrenses to be disturbed
as closely as practical. If some of the maps given need to be enlarged to make
this practical, please do so.
'2. Any haul roads constructed to serve the gravel pit alone (not pro-exlst►ng) should
be considered as part of the pit acreages and shown as such. Please clarify this
situation for these pits.
3. Rather than trying to show all gravel stockpile locations on the maps, please
describe the typical placement of gravel stockpiles In pit areas.
EXHIBIT D.
1. Wildlife: I Intend to communicate with Jack Vayhinger of the Colorado Division
of Wildlife concerning your statement that the wildlife statement enclosed Is
applicable to all the E1 Paso County gravel pits In the eastern part of the
county. I will express to him the similar natwre of these operations. If he
agrees with this statement, I will accept It. I will also ask him If the same
can be sold for the Dei1acroce pit which Is In a very different part of El Paso
County. You may also wish to contact him In this matter.
Vegetation: Some data on existing vegetation for the E1 Paso County pits should
be provided to the Division. Perhaps the Soil Conservation Service can be contacted
to provide a general statement concerning the existing vegetation, if they are
given the pit locations.
3. Soils: a. The Wilson and Sokol pits do not semi to be Included on your listing
of pits as organized into soil types. hTilch associations do they fell under
b. The Dellecroce pit seems to be within soil region 2, the Kettle-Pring--Peyton
association rather than the Truckton-Biakeland-Bresser association as on your
list. Into which of the two generals zones would this pit then fit?
EXHIBIT E
1 . Are the seeding rates as given for the various seed mixes drilled rates?
2. Is the general reseeding plan to be the one given as a general example In
Exhibit D? In general , the methodology given therein is acceptable.
3. Although the final reclamation slopes are to be fairly gentle (4:1) , some
mulching would seem to be necessary, especially In a generally arid or seml-
arid environment. A minimum o Q ,ODO lbs. per epere would be a good rate.
4. A legume should be Incorporated Into all of the various seeding mixes to help
p—ji de long term nitrogen. An example would be Birdsfoot Trefoil at 0.5 ib.
PLS/acre (drilled) . If you contact the SCS concerning existing vegetation, they
may wish to recormiend an appropriate legume.
EXHIBIT F.
The status of the zoning of the Dellacroce pit should be clarified In writing by
the Land Use Department.
I have trit-1 to be comprehensive In my review of these permits. I feel that we can
settle the various outstanding questions on the pits and be ready for the October
meeting. I will be expec Ing your reply at your eerilest convenience. If you have
any questions, please call me.
As per Board recommendation, I will plan to come down to Ei Paso County to visit
some selected pits mined in the past by El Paso County but not now to be ermitted,
In order to evaluate the reclamation of these pits for the Board. I wllf contact
you as to when we can get together.
Sincerely,
Mark S. Loye
Reclamation Specialist MSL/Jm
i
