03
• utilized flaxen. Twenty-seven specimens.
Description: there is evidence of use on one or more edges. These
show no signs of intentional modification of either edge or form, and
appear to have been used only slightly. The assumption could be made
that they were picked up, used as needed, and discarded after a short
time.
Materials: chert and quartzite.
Size range: the utilized flakes are generally smaller than those which
show evidence of modification.
Nammerstones: These items make up a very limited portion of the total
co leTction. Only five hammers tones were recovered, and these are split
between unmodified and modified cobble tools depending upon whether any
intentional changes have been made on the natural cobble.
Hammerstones: unmodified cobble, Type ZA. Tw0 Specimens (Fig. 10a, c).
Description: tools are well-worn river cobbles with no artificial modi-
fication. Use marks are limited to battering and crushing on one or more
ends.
Materials: quartzite and granitic.
Edge wear: battering on extreme ends ranging from minimal with no flat-
tening, to extreme flattened, with occasional spalling.
Size range: length, 89-111 mm.; width, 44-96 mm.; and thickness, 33-61 mm.
Xammerstones: modified cobble, Type ZB.
Description: large heavy cobble with one or more percussion flakes re-
moved. Codification of the specimens in this collection did not aid
appreciably in forming a hammering surface.
Materials: quartzite and chert.
Edge wear: ranges from minimal battering to well-defined flattening.
Size range: length, 98-104 mm.; width, 48-108 mm.; and thickness, 28-
81 mm.
Special notes: flakes struck from one specimen form a reasonably sharp
cutting edge, but no apparent use of that edge is visible.
choppers. The choppers are differentiated on the basis of the kind of
modification present. In the specimens recovered, most were bifacially
percussion flaked, with one chopper that was bifacially worked on one edge
and unifacially worked on another portion of the tool.
Choppers: bifacial choppers, Type ZIR. $iX Specimens (Fig. lOb).
Description: medium to large cobble, with bifacial percussion flaking from
the sinuous chopping edge. They have an irregular to oval outline.
Materials: chert, quartz, and quartzite.
Flaking pattern: one with circumferential flaking and four with partial
• flaking.
