64
Classification
• Simple bifaces. This group of tools is the largest in terms of sheer
numbers, but there are few complete specimens. The bulk of the collec-
tion consists of fragments which have been organized into categories
based on the portion of the tool represented. Although they have been
incorporated into the typology, these groups of fragments do not in any
way represent examples of a type in the strict sense of the term. Biface
fragments do contain sets of attributes, but the relationship between
these attributes and those expressed in the complete specimen is unclear.
The fragmentary specimens are included in this discussion only on a des-
criptive level.
simple bifaces: oval forms, Type zn. Two specimens (Fig. 6a,,b).
Description: characterized by an ovoid silhouette, percussion flaking,
roughly twice as long as the width, and symmetrical biconvex cross sec-
tion (the edge lies on a plane that divides the tool equally).
Materials: chert and basalt
Edge angles: 55°-60°.
Flaking pattern: irregular oval.
Edge wear: step flaking,
Size range: length, 75-104 mm.; width, 37-55 mm.; and thickness, 19-23 mm.
Special notes: one specimen has long straight flake scars, as well as
ovate scars.
Correlations with other sites: similar tools have been reported from
~ the Magic Mountain site (Irwin-Williams and Irwin 1966).
Simple bifaces: discoidal forms, Type IB. Dne specimen (Fig. 6c).
Description: almost circular silhouette, biconvex cross section and per-
cussion flaking.
14aterial: chert.
Edge angles: 60°.
Flaking pattern: irregular.
Edge wear: step flaking.
Size range long axis, 42 mm.; short axis, 36 mm.; and thickness, 13 mm.
Special notes: all three of the above bifaces are relatively heavy and
large, with erratic and crude percussion flaking techniques resulting
in a sinuous edge, and no extensive wear is evident. Microscopic examin-
ation did reveal limited step flaking, which, according to Judge (1973:
155) indicates "heavy scraping on a hard surface...". This is in line
with the general appearance of these specimens.
Correlations with other sites: similar discoidal specimens have been
recovered on the Front Range in Colorado by the Irwins at the LoDaisKa
site (Irwin and Irwin 1959:47, Fig. 35), which they feel are related
to a Fremont or Fremont-like occupation. The oval forms have no readily
• apparent correlate on the eastern slope, and little is evident to the
west that resembles these particular specimens.
