57
• Site Distribution
Prehistoric cultural remains for Tract 5 are limited to a single
isolated find located on the ridge west of Taylor Creek on the eastern
side of Sec. 18, Tan, R93w. No other cultural materials were observed,
other than recent historic roads and fencelines (Table 11).
Off-Tract Survey Area
Aside from the off-tract area surveyed adjacent to Tract 8, the only
other off-tract area is located on the western side of Duffy Mountain, in
the NW!; of Sec. 32, T6n, R93w. This area was examined after a local resi-
' dent informed the survey crew that one or more deteriorating petrograph
sites were located there. No petrography were located, but Sh1F344 and
SMF345 were recorded. These are both open lithic sites located on and
•~• adjacent to the saddle between Duffy Mountain and Signal Butte, just above
the western end of the Duffy Tunnel. Roughly ninety acres were covered in
the search for the rock art sites.
Summary of Survey Results
Area Surveyed
A total of 14,278 ac., or 32% of the total acreage (Table 12) was
surveyed within the tract boundaries. An additional 555 ac. were sur-
veyed outside but adjacent to the tract boundaries, resulting in a grand
total of 14,833 ac. The "Field checked, rejected" category, as identified
27,540 ac. , contained about 63%. The "Not field checked" category, as iden-
tified in Figs 3 through 7, includes acreage that was not surveyed for several
• reasons. A lack of tenant permission caused 814 ac., or about 2"~ of
