UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO
BOULDE R. COLO R400
oC/.nru[nr O~ •n r~..0/OLOOr
-.- whether the proposed dam la built on the Tampa or ~Ylllame Fork P1ver, Slte
$MF281 should be excavated to salvage the potential lnlor-..atlon which it
contains. Surface evidence indicates occupation by the Tampa Sand of +he
Qtee. There is possibly 6 to 8 feet of cultural deposit at these overhangs,
with an undetermined amount of past tics represented. There are local
informants wno state that the area directly to the northwest of the Bite
is an area of to "Indian Burial around." Fhiether or not these reports are
true, the area deserves excavation before it 1a destroyed as a source of
material for a dam, or =ads accessible by eonetructian activity and the
Snflux of a great number of new persons Snto the site area.
Excepting site $HF281, there are presently no known archaeological
sites of ecientifie importance in the aeaae to be flooded by a dam on either
the Zama or the Nilliame Fork Rivers. However, both possible areas which
night be flooded need to be checked further in order to coap7y with the
Federal Antiquities Act. In the aeantime, provisions should be made to
protect Slte $?~F281.
•
rater tz •
Professor of Anthropology
n
U
