ABSTRACT
At the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Laboratory
of Public Archaeology, Colorado State University, undertook a Class II
archaeological reconnaissance of proposed federal coal leas e. tracts in
northwestern Colorado in order to estimate the nature and extent of
cultural resources in the area.
The project area lies to the south of the Yampa River valley in
the lJilliams Fork Mountains in the Craig-Hayden region of northwestern
Colorado. A total of 33 prehistoric sites consisting of open lithic,
open camps, and petrograph sites were located, as well as 16 historic
A• architectural sites. These were recorded within or immediately ad-
jacent to tract boundaries. Two additional sites were recorded at some
distance to the west of the project area. Total surface coverage amounts
to 14,280 ac. of the 44,000 ac. included in the project.
Fieldwork commenced in June, 1975, and continued until August,
1975, after which time laboratory analysis and report preparation began.
Project personnel consisted of graduate and undergraduate anthropology
students from Colorado State University, under the direction of Calvin H.
Jennings, principal investigator. Donna C. Daniels, Michael G. Spitzer,
and Christopher S. Arthur, graduate students, served as field supervisors.

viii
