The waste disposal site is located in the
Northwest quarter of Township 8 south, Range 89 west, adjacent to North
ltionQ.,on Creek. The disposal area is located in the natural valley
bordered by hills approximately 500 feet above the bottom of the
valley. A gravel road leads from Carbondale into the mine and a haul
road is being used by duup trucks to carry refuse material from the
mine to the refuse site. Overlooking the center of the pile, this
gravel road is approximately 300 feet above the bottaa of the valley.
The area slopes in the southeast direction. The maximum
difference in surface elevation of the existing refuse pile is m the
order of 30 feet. The toe of this refuse pile leads into the retention
pond at an approximate elevation of 7450 feet. The runoff in the
valley drains into an open ditdi rortheast of the refuse pile and
collects in the retention pond. Floristically, the valley associated
with the disposal area is a typical transition zone 2 diaracterized by
sparsely vegetated hillside.
G~OLDGIC SE1TIIiG. The site is situated along the eastern edge of
the Grand Hogback Monocline, which defines the eastern boundary of the
Colorado Plateau Physiographic Province. Bedroc9c in the immediate
site vicinity is the Flanoos Shale of Cretaceous age.
