~__.
,_,
s/Ol
Edit/KCZ'
58-Haxtun loamy sand. Zhis deep, Hell drained soil is in slightly
depressional areas on smooth plains. It formed in eolian sand underlain by a
older buried soil. Slope is 0 to 3 percent. Areas are irregular in shape
and are 40 to 400 acres in size.
' Typically, the surface layer is yrayish brown loamy sand 12 inches thick.
Zhe subsoil is dark grayish brown sandy loam 12 inches thick. the next layer
is a buried subsoil of dark gray clay loam 15 inches thick. 'ihe upper 6
inches of the substratum is pale brown clay loam, and the lower part to a
depth of 60 inches or more is pale yellow loan.
Incluued in this unit are small areas of Ascalon sandy loam, 0 to 3
percent slopes. Included areas make up about 10 percent of the total
acreage.
• ~ttneability of this Haxtun soil is rapid to a depth of 24 inches and
moderate below this depth. Available water capacity is high. Effective
rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Idrroff is slow, and the hazaru of water
erosion is slight. Zhe hazard of soil blowing is high.
This unit is used mainly for ronirrigated and irrigated crops. It is
also used as rangeland.
If this unit is used for ronirrigated crops, the main limitation is the
hazard of soil blowing, fiecause precipitation is not sufficient for annual
cropping, a cropping system that includes small grain and summer fallow Ls
most suitable. Soil blowirx3 can be reduced by returnirg crop residue to the
soil and practicing minimum tillage. Liyht applications of nitrogen
generally increase the production of crop residue, which reduces soil blowing
and traps snow.
• -
