Third Park Federal Coal Exploration License Environmental Assessment
Drill holes would typically be less than 6 inches in diameter and would have an average depth of about
135 feet. Drilling mud would be used to plug each hole. Drilling mud would be pumped through the drill
pipe to the bottom of the hole, and the hole would be filled while removing the drill pipe. Bentonite chips
(approximately I50 pounds of 3/8-inch) and drill cuttings would be added to the hole within a depth of 10
feet below ground surface. Commercially available "sakcrete" would be used to complete the plug, filling
the hole level with the ground surface. This method of hole plugging is consistent with procedures
approved and incorporated in the New Horizon Mine Permit (C-81-008) issued by the Colorado Division
of Minerals and Geology. An aluminum cap with the hole identification code would be set in the cement
plug.
Western Fuels CEL Envirorcmenm! Assessment
