1999 Soil Testing -North Refuse Areas
At the request of DMG additional soil samples were collected and analyzed to better
characterize topsoil and subsoil characteristics for the north refuse areas. Two soil series
required additional data, Satanka and Potts Series.
On May 22, 1999 samples were collected using afour-foot hand coring tube (1.25").
Individual samples were based on identifiable horizon. Horizons thicker than 12" were
divided such that no single sample represented more than 12" of soil thickness. Two
locations were sampled for each of the soil series (see Map 82 for locations). These
samples were then composited by horizon for analysis.
Samples were sent to the Colorado State University Soil, Water and Plant Testing
Laboratory for analysis. The requested pazameters included:
pH EC
texture SAR
%OM fertility (N, P, K)
selenium boron
Metals were analyzed on a `plant available' basis.
Potts Series: iD-}
• Sample sites P1 and P2 were selected to represent this series. This series is dominated by
western wheatgrass with scattered big sagebrush. Downy brome is a problem over much
of the azea. Prairie dogs inhabit much of this soil series.
