• New Castle Energy Corporation
Coal Ridge #1 Mine
STORM DRAINAGE CONTROL SYSTEM
The Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division (CMLRD) requires
that a certification be made of the constructed facilities at the
Coal Ridge No. 1 Mine that relate to the storm drainage and
sediment control facilities. This certification is required to
indicate that the constructed facilities will function as those
permitted by the CMLRD.
SITE INSPECTION
A site inspection was made by the engineer on June 21, 1988. A
set of design drawings (Reference 2) were used on this inspection
trip. The drainage ditches were walked and measurements of the
sizes were made. Additionally, the culverts were measured and an
assessment made of their effectiveness. Measurements were taken
at the sediment pond (Pond A) to determine the size of the
facility and its capacity.
DRAINAGE DITCHES
Drainage ditches are provided throughout the surface facility
area as shown on the Mine Grading Plan (attached). The eastern
portion of the site does not currently exist, e.g., Pond B, the
Topsoil Stockpi]s for 21,000, 5,500, 20,000, and 2 each piles for
6,500 cubic yards of material. Pond B is NOT part of the runoff
or sediment control facilities but rather is an operational
component to facilitate the storage of Vulcan Ditch water for use
in the mining and makeup water for processing.
The drainage ditches exist on the the uphill sides of the roads
and serve to collect runoff and sediment from all disturbed areas
on the site. As shown on the Mine Grading Plan, there are three
configurations of ditches designed as required for the varying
flow capacities. Measurements made at the site indicate that the
drainage ditches equal or exceed the sizes indicated.
CULVERTS
Measurements were made of the corrugated metal pipe (CMP)
culverts on the site. Table 1 lists the design sizes and the
installed sizes of the culverts
All installed culverts equal or exceed the designed sizes. The
culverts, as installed, will function to direct drainage and
sediment to Pond A for detention and sedimentation.
