for Denial -Mineral Resource Extraction SD05-001 AKA Ben.
demographics. Every possible effort should be made to foster further residential development of this
pristine and desirable area. The presence of a dusty, noisy, polluting and unsightly mining operation will
lower existing property values and delay further residential developments. I suggest the loss of future
property and sales tax due to a reduction in Coalby Canyon residential developments and property values
would be far greater than the increase of County and State coffers due to income from the proposed mine.
3. The adverse health effects to the predominately retired residents of Coalby Canyon are readity
apparent. Some residents, such as my parents (Mr. and Mrs. William R. Lundberg ,18984 Ward Creek
Road) moved to Cedaredge and Coalby Canyon because of the clean environment and the positive
benefits of Gean air and water on chronic health issues. My mother suffers from chronic lung problems
that would be signficently impacted by the dust and pollution caused by the adjacent mine operations. To
approve the operaton of the mine in this residential area will adverse impact the quality of life and health
of all residents of Coalby Canyon.
4. The adverse impact on Air and Water Quality in the Coalby Canyon area is one that I presume requires
an Environmental Impact Statement. If such a study is not mandatory then I suggest one be mandated to
ensure that proper environmental concerns and issues are addressed. The use of diesel powered
generators and dust-producing operations are of utmost concern. The use of an ineffiaent power source
that is a significant noise, air and water pollution source is unacceptable in a residential area.
5. The transportation infrastructure of the Coalby Canyon area is insufficient for the safe movement of the
equipment, materials, personnel and trucks required to operate the mine and transport supplies and
product. The local roadway has numerous steep grades, narcow roads, corners and areas of restricted
visibility, all of which increase the risk to residents and visitors alike. Even one death or injury due to
substantially increased traffic by mine related vehicles is unacceptable.
6. Conversations with long-term residents of the area have shown that there are indications of long term
Native American habitation within the mine area. These indications include grinding stones and
handholds carved in the Giff face. These environmental modifications are strong indicators of past
long-term habitation, the relics of which would be damaged or destroyed by mining operations. Long-berm
habitation implies the presence of sacred or burial sites, which are protected by federal and state statutes.
7. The adverse impact to my parents and their neighbors in the Coalby Canyon area is of great concern
to my family and me. The adverse impact to my parents health, property values and quality of life is
unacceptable. The economic damage to the future residential deveopment would be substantial. The
destruction of this peaceful residential development, in a beautfful valley with such grand views, would be
unforgivable. One of the reasons I moved to the mountains of California was to live in a place almost as
nice a Coalby Canyon; to idly sit by while this pristine area is destroyed is unimaginable. I therefore
respectfully request that Mineral Resource Extraction SD05-001 AKA Benson Brothers Red Canyon Rock
Quarry Application be denied.
Very Respectfully,
(Signed)
Thane Lundberg
