From: 'Tom And Kathy Conlon" <tkconlon4t3(rjtearthlink.neb
To: <planning(c~deltacounty.com>
Date: 2/19/05 9:O6PM
Subject: Benson Brothers Red Canyon rock quarry SD05-001
February 19, 2005
Delta County Planning Department
Delta County Courthouse
501 Palmer Street, Suite 115
Delta, Colorado 81416
Delta County Planning Department,
We have just found out about the rock quarry the Benson Brothers intend to operete in the Coalby Valley,
appliicafion (SD05-001). We are quite concerned about the impacts this operaton will have on us and our
family as property owners in this valley. Although there was a mining operation in this area over 20 years
ago, the distinctiveness and personality of the area has changed. It is now more populated with well over
150 families making a home in the near proximity of the rock quarry ske. Over 21 homes are within Y.
mile. An operation of this magnitude in a quiet residential area is not compatible. Not only wiB the
property rights of alt the home owners in this valley be impacted but also many more citizens in all of the
Surface Creek Valley will be affected as well. The gravel trucks writ be traveling, from 5 a day at the least
to 30 a day at the most, all up and down the roadways from the Coalby site to the Benson Brothers
commercial location in Austin. Also they will have other contractors hauling gravel from their quarry to
wherever. This will have a tremendous impact on all of the community and will cause much wear and tear
and danger on our roads. The noise levels from this operation will be horrendous up and down the entire
Coalby Canyon. At 85 decibels at 500 ft ft is likened, in my mind, to a Jet plane taking off overtread, and
this will go on all day from 7 a.m. to 5:30 daily. These hours can be extended at their will and workirg On
Saturday and Sunday is not ruled out according to the Benson Brothers. This will goon for a period no
less than 15 years!!! This has got to have a significant implication on the physical and mental health of
those living nearby. It is our understanding also that generators and compressors will be used to run
equipment. Would this be allowed in a housing neighborhood? Would one homeowner be allowed to run
a generator indiscriminatety with total disregard for his neighbors because he didn't want to run electric to
his properly?
The devastation to this area will be so great d will not be able to be reGaimed! We feel that the conflicts
and negative Impacts to so many people of this community are so great that we request that this
application to two individuals be denied.
Sincerely,
Tom and Kathy Conlon
