February15, 2005
Delta County Planning Dept.
Delta County Court House
501 Palmer Street
Delta, Co. 81416
Delfe County Planning Dept
Date Received
Za 1~-/ b s~
gY: (~ R -
Re: Benson Bros. Red Canyon rock quarry application (SD05-001)
Please, please, please deny this application. This would be 15 to 20 years of pure
horror for the residents of this canyon.
I am an adjoining property owner (in my late 60's) to this proposed industrial
development. Due to the many new residents moving here over the past 10 years, this
is now a residential area -not industrial.
The noise and dust/dirt factor alone would be detrimental to everyone's health -mine
especially, as I am allergic to dust/dirt which ff it gets into my lungs, it brings on attacks
of bronchitis/asthma. There would be a great deal of dust/dirt coming into my back yard
as there are wind and air currents that travel right up the little canyon into my yard. I
live in my back yard during the spring and summer months -entertaining with bar-b-
ques, parties, etc. You can imagine trying to have a function with dust/dirt swirling
about, much less the noise.
And here we get to the noise -bulldozers ripping and gouging out rock, crushing
noises, hydraulic hammering going on; the sound of compressors and portable
generators filling the air all day long.
Then there is the noise of dozens of trucks using fake breaks coming in and going out -
up and down the roads. This is a danger in itself. They are going to have to come in
and go out on a blind curve. How dangerous is that! We have people (including
children) who ride heir horses up and down the road that is proposed for all this truck
traffic -think of the safety of these riders. Most of us have small ranches and many of
us have horses (including me). I suppose you are going to say -well, don't ride your
horses.
The visual effect will be devastating to this little mountain. It will be scarred with the
taking of all the trees, some of which are hundreds of years old. I've seen what
reclamation does -and believe me - it doesn't look the same afterward.
;,.
You would be displacing deer and many other wild creatures from their natural habitat -
15 to 20 years of displacement. Not only would the wildlife leave this area that would be
mined, but the deer along with other wildlife would move completely out of this area,
