FEB 1 5 2005
Feb. 14"' 2005
Delta County Planning Department, ,
We are writing concerning the Benson Brothers Red Canyon rock quarry application
(SD05-001. We are requesting that this application be DENIED, for the following
reasons.
Our main reason is one of heaRh. My husband suffers from severe sinus problems
and allergies. One of the main contributors to this is dust. No dust control is planned for
this operation. There will be considerable dust generated during the mining procedun:
no matter how it is done. The owners say that they will mist the material being mined
but this is not included in their application. Even with misting there wiN still be a lot of
dust.
There has not been any mining in this area for 20 years. It is no longer a mining area
but a growing residential neighborhood, There an; new sub divisions being planned in
the area.
Then there is the question of safety. Our home is just South of the planned quarry
under the sandstone hill that they are planning on putting the quarry in. What is to stop
the mining from causing loose rocks to dislodge and come down on our property do a
great deal of damage. Also there is the question of flooding. We have had water come
down of the ridge and flood our yard. It would have run under our house if we had not
been out digging ditches to divert ft. It would even be worse if the vegetation was
removed from the hill. Sometimes now the road next to our house going to our
neighbors looks like a river when ft rains. In our estimation this would only worsen with
the quarry go in.
Then there is the question of noise. We will be subjected to the sounds of mining
machinery alt day every day five days a week and may be even more. We moved to his
area because of the peace and quite and we would no longer have that with a quany in
our back yard. We also came here for the beauty of the area and the abundance of wild
life. We would no longer have the beauty because of the scarring that mining will do and
the noise and mining activity will drive away the wild like.
Another concern is Want Creek Road and the traffic this will generate on it and the
damage that large trucks do to road ways. Who is responsible for the up creek of this
road? There is also a safety issue here as the entrance and exit from the quarry is on a
blind curve. We already have a lot of traffic on this road and up to thirty gravel trucks a
day would make R so much worse and more dangerous. We were also told that the
trucks would be using fake brakes, which also add to the noise. This also school bus
route and we will have children getting off and on the school bus all up and down Ward
Creek rued. This is another safety issue.
Again we ask that this application be denied.
Thank You
~~ ~~~
~ B-~~2 ~2~ ~~
y
