- 22 -
•
The recommended cut slopes and configurations for individual
geotechnical units are presented on Plated 4A through 4D.
Plate 4 A shows a design cross section for a cut located
---------------------- --------------------------
in sound sandstone. The occurrence of sound sandstone is not
------------------
probable within the upper haul road section; it may be applied
only for cuts excavated in sound sandstone ledges in the lower part,
within Munger Creek valley, As shown on the plate, we re-
commend excavation of benches with vertical faces. The height
of these benches should be limited to no more than 30 feet. In-
termediate benches, no less than 1D feet wide, should be in-
corporated into the design,
• plate 4 B shows a_design_cross_section for a cut located
----------------- ----------------------
in interbedded sandstone and shale. Such a cut is probable at
-------------------------
the location of the existing road cut No. 2. The recommended
cut slope '~ 1 is based largely oh the observation of the
behavior of the existing road cut. As discussed earlier,
sloughing has been observed from the crest of the cut. To
eliminate this sloughing, some protection would be required as
indicated on the plate. If not installed, sloughing has to be
expected and increased maintenance will be required.
Plate 4 C shows a design_cross_section for a cut located
---------------------- -------------------------
in_terrace_deposits. The recommended cut slope of 3/4 1 is
based again on the observation of the existing cuts in the
•
