- 10 -
•
been exposed for a period of more than 4 years, it can be expected
that cuts of a similar size will not create any significant slope
stability hazard in the future years either.
2.5 GEOTECHNICAL UNITS
For the purpose of this study the area of concern was mapped
and divided into several geotechnical units. These units are shown
on Geotechnical Maps, Plates 2 A through 2 D. Geotechnical
mapping was performed without using any surveying instruments and
its accuracy is limited for this reason. The maps will provide
information on materials which will be encountered during the
excavation of the cuts, construction of fills or other facilities.
It will also provide information on the extent of individual soil
types that may used as construction materials. The map does not
show any thickness of individual units as it is impossible to pre-
dict it without subsurface exploration. Some road cuts that have been
excavated in soils may encounter rock if they are deepened or ex-
cavated at different locations. The prediction of geologic con-
ditions in the detail would require drilling or excavation of test
pits.
The geotechnical units identified and delineated on the
geotechnical map are: man-made fills, alluvial deposits, terrace
deposits, colluvial soils, talus deposits, cliff-forming sand-
. stones, and slope-forming shales and sandstones.
Man_made_fills are formed mostly by the material that was
