2.0 INTRODUCTION

As past of the data base for an environmental impact assessment, a year
study of the major a?vatic systems in the vicinity of the Orchard Valley Mine,
?aeniz, Colorado was began is October, 1976. The following presents the
resu'_ts of those studies or. Physical Description of the Study azea
(Section 3.0), Water quality (Section 4.0), Benthic Life (Section 5.0) and
Fish Life (Section 6.0).
The Grchard Valley Mine is a sub-surface mine located just north of
•
the town of Paonia on z hillside ap~'oximately 2,000 feet higher thar, the town.
Stevens Gulch Creek, an irtermittert stream for most of its lergth, drains
the mine site and runs into the North Fork of the Gunnison apg•oximately
c_posite the town. L~ addition to the mine, a rail spur, coal-loading,
znd storage facilities are located on z 50 acre tract of the North Fork
Valley about 1.6 miles above the mouth of Stevens Gulch Creek and near the
north bank of the river. Mdp 1 illustrates these relationships.
The following describes the rns nose and scope, the general sampling
•
plan and an overview of tine acuatic systems being considered. Succeeding
sections describe fin,~~'nES for wafer evality, benthic macro-organisms, and
fish life.
G-1
