2.2 Overview of Aouatic Systems
of the North cork
•
^_he Orchard Palley :~:ine lies in the drainage o£ the North Fork of
the Gunnison River, approximately 23 river miles up from the mouth. The
North Fork is the only major s t eam of the valley, draining an area of
approximately 93 souare miles and having a total length of about 35 river
^ules from its mouth to Paonia Reservoir. The river drains into the Gunnison
River, which is a major tibutary of the Colorado River.
There are a number of small tibutaries that drain into the North Fork,
many of them intermittent in nature, and there is one major reservoir (Paonia
reservoir) near the upper end of the Valley, plus several smaller reservoirs
on ~ributaries* (See below.} Above Paonia there are 13 small tributaries.
Cf these, 7 are listed as intermittent on UPS maps; however, more of these
• may be irtereSttent Char, indicated, since Stevens Gulch Creek is indicated
as flowing, trlt is in fact intermSttent along most of its length. There are
also a number of unnamed, short, intermittent steams from steep gulches
along the drunage.
The most important tributaries of the uppermost drainage are Muddy e.nd
Ant:^racite Creeks. In '_he immediate vicinity of ?aonia, Pinnesota Creek
(on the south bank) onto°s the river just above the `tighway 187 bridge into
±~wn, an3 Stevens Gulch enters approximately across the river on the opposite
bank.
*(°axter Reservoir; Cot'~nwood Creek; Todd Reservoir; McDona.id Creek; Rocker
Reservoir; Reynolds C<eek; Minnesota Reservoir; Mirnesota Creek; Terror Creek
3eservcir; Terror Creek)
•
2 -~*
