SNOWMASS COAL COMPANY
i
Mr. Jim Goodyear
District Wildlife Manager
Division of Wildlife
0323 Elk Ranye Drive
Carbondale, CO 81623 May 20,1983
Denver Oll,ce: Suite 2300
410 Sevenleenlh Streel
Denver, Colorado 80202
(303) 826 1966
1

Dear Jim,
Enclosed you will find a complete 404 permit application for our
proposed weirs. The enclosed drawings show the fish ladder design that
I incorporated into the weir design.
Utilizing the information you gave me 1 feel that my current de-
sign is best suited for our project based on the following reasons.
On page 3 of "Correcting Vertical Fish Barriers", September 1977, it
states that the maximum velocity of the water should be 6 to 8 times
the fish length. The maximum velocity of the water passing over our
weirs will be 2.2 feet per second. This low velocity will be slow
enough to allow passage for the size of fish found in Thompson Creeks.
The current fish ladder design reduces the maximum vertical distance
a fish will have to jump to one foot. In addition the current ladder
is designed so that water will always flow into the upper box. This
assumption is based on my calculations that the maximum horizontal
distance the water will travel when it passes over the weir will be
1.8 feet; therefore, the water will fill the upper box and drain into
the lower box at all times. Finally, the ladders will have V-notches
in them to help the fish pass over the weir when there is low flow in
the creeks.
I would appreciate hearing
before I send the 404 permit in
I would request that you send m
in with the application. If you
the design please call or write
change. I have seta target dat
pleted application to the Corp
Again, thank you for your
mation.
Mine Oll,ce. P.O.
