b~ <br />AO-B TEFTON LOAM - 1-3% SLOPES, CLASS IIIw IRRIGATED AND NONIRRIGATED <br />This soil type is deep, somewhat poorly drained and is located on gently <br />sloping floodplains and alluvial valley floors. It is formed in mixed alluvium. <br />The Tefton sail is cut by oxbows and old stream channels in many places. <br />Elevation ranges from 6,000 to x,500 feet; average annual precipitation <br />is 16" to 19"- The average annual air temperature is 45-53 degrees F. <br />and the average frost free season is 105-130 days. <br />Typically, the surface layer is light brownish gray loam about 5" thick. <br />The lower part of the surface layer is pale brown loam and fine sandy loam <br />about 12" thick. The underlying material is a pinkish gray loam stratified <br />with very fine sandy loam and fine sandy loam about 39" thick. This layer <br />overlies sand and gravel that extends in excess of 60". Sand and gravel <br />may-occur at any depth below 40". In some places the surface layer is a <br />fine sandy loam. <br />Permeability is moderate to moderately slow. Effective rooting depth is <br />from 24"-36" due to a normally high watertable. Available water capacity <br />is high. Surface runoff is slow and the hazard of water erosion is moderate. <br />This soil has a fluctuating watertable in most places that rises between <br />2-3' of the surface during the spring and summer. This soil is subject <br />to flooding except where protected by upstream dams or channeled streams. <br />Frequency of flooding is occasional. <br />This soil is mainly used for irrigated crops such as alfalfa, barley and <br />oats as well as irrigated pasture and rangeland. <br />The primary management concerns on this soil type are controlling soil <br />erosion by water; maintaining organic matter; and fertility in the surface <br />layers, and the proper use of irrigation water. <br />Native vegetation on this soil consists primarily of tufted hairgrass, slender <br />wheatgrass, redtop, Nebraska sedge, Baltic rush, cottonwood trees, American <br />bistort, and willows. Wildlife such as mule deer, cottontail rabbit, muskrat, <br />squirrel, coyotes, waterfowl, and various birds utilize this area. <br />Flooding hazard and wetness attributed to a fluctuating watertable are <br />the main limiting soil features when planning for the construction of homes <br />and other community developments. The construction of sanitary facilities <br />pose a potential pollution problem to nearby water. Drainage and protection <br />from flooding are usually needed before any building contruction is started. <br />13B <br />
