Demonstration Area #2
Demonstration Area #2 is located in the southern portion of Mine 3, and is comprised of
• some 57 acres of reclaimed land. Of this, 6 acres were seeded in 1986, 3 acres in 1987,
and the remainder (which surrounds the 1986 seeding) was seeded in 1983.
The area-weighted average of the ECCS evaluations for the parcels within Demonstration
Area 2 yielded an average condition value of 28, which places the area into the sli h
erosion condition class. However, the Native Pasture Reference Area (which is only some
1500 feet to the north) is possessed of nearly identical slopes, and has an ECCS value
of 22, which also places it in the sli h erosion condition class.
The USLE calculation, utilizing a topographic factor of 8.25 (~ erage slope length 400
feet, average slope gradient 20%) and a cropping factor of 0.07 (0.065 by interpolation
using average standing cover of 40%, and 58% ground cover) yields a calculated soil loss
of 5.60 Tons/Acre/Year for Demonstration Area #2. In comparison, the native pasture
reference area, utilizing a topographic factor of 9.5 (20% slope, with 600 ft slope length)
and a cropping factor of 0.08 (Appreciable brush, 50% grass dominant canopy and 40%
• ground cover/litter) yield a calculated soil loss) of 7.30 Tons/Acre/Year from the Native
Pasture Reference Area. If (for comparison) the same topographic factor of 8.25 is used
for both areas, the calculated soil loss from the Native Pasture Reference becomes 6.34
Tons/Acre/Year. This value is still greater than that calculated for Demonstration Area
#2. Therefore, CYCC feels that Demonstration Area #2 meets the criteria of Rule
4.05.121.
•
TR 90-06 Exhibit 3 - 48 Revised
