MAP UNIT CoC: COCHETOPA LOAM, 8 TO I S PERCENT SLOPE
•
This deep, well-drained, fine textured soil occurs on moderately To strongly
sloping alluvial fans and terraces, mid-slopes, and ridges. This soil is formed in
alluviurr~ derived from sandstones and shales. This mapping unit occurs in Section 31,
T.SN R.85W, and Section 36, T.SN R.86W, at 7,000 to 7,600 feet elevation.
The soil profile representative of this mapping unit does not vary significantly
in horizonation from the described soil series (Cochetopa loam). The irrigated phase
of Cochetopa, 8 to IS percent slope is also similar to the description of Cochetopa,
2 to 8 percent slope. This profile differs in amount of moisture in the profile and
depth of surface horizon.
This soil is used extensively for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The
predominate vegetation includes Artemisia tridentate, Chrysothamnus ss~, and Carex.
Some wide draws have Po ulus tremuloites Aspen, Rosa woodsi Woods rose and
Cirsium arvensis Canada thistle as the vegetative cover. Portions of this mapping
unit are irrigated for hay production.
Permeability is slow. Erosion hazard is slight. Effective rooting depth varies
between 15 and 58 inches. Ground water depth is greater than 5 feet. Stoniness
• l
i
0
c
ass
s
.
Land capability unit is Vle.
MAP UNIT CoD: COCHETOPA LOAM, 15 TO 30 PERCENT SLOPE
This deep, well-drained, fine textured soil occurs on moderately steep midslopes
and side slopes of ridges. This soil formed in alluvium derived from weathered
sandstones and shales. This mopping unit occurs in Sections 31, T.SN R.85W and 36,
T.SN R.86W at 6,900 to 7,200 feet.
This mapping unit does not vary significantly in the parameters reported for the
pedon (OS-02-03-032) description.
Presently this soil is used extensively for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat.
Vegetation includes Artemisia tridentate big sage, ~uercus gambellii gambel oak,
Symphoricarpos spp. snowberry, Amelanchier sue. serviceberry, Bromus anomalus
Brome grass and Bouteloua spp. grams grass.
Permeability is slow. Erosion hazard is slight. Effective rooting depth is
. between 40 and 60 inches. Ground water depth is greater than 5 feet. Stoniness
class is 0.
Land capability unit is Vlle.
2.3-6
