IL~I <br />• observations of the existing portal areas and subsurface conditions in the test <br />trenches. Bulk samples were obtained of intact material from the test trenches. <br />Representative samples of the excavated mixture of soils/bedrock were also <br />obtained. <br />Subsurface Conditions <br />P3 Portal. The P3 Portal area is located at a moderately sloping hillside <br />located between two drainages in Cow Creek Canyon. Existing slopes in the area are <br />on the order of 2:1 (horizontal:vertical) to 3:1 slopes (Fig. 2). The area is covered <br />with native grasses and trees. A seep area was observed on the eastern portion of <br />the hillside at the approximately location shown on Fig. 2. Sloughing of the surface <br />soils was observed at the seep location. No signs of large scale unstable areas were <br />observed. Avery hard, resistant sandstone is exposed north of the Cow Canyon <br />drainage and also along the western toe of the proposed P3 re-graded area (near the <br />• toe of Sections A and B on Fig. 2). <br />Soil conditions observed in the test pit consisted of a shallow layer of topsoil <br />and residual soils derived from the underlying sandstone, siltstone, and shale <br />bedrock. The thickness of the overburden soils is on the order of 1 to 2 feet. The <br />underlying bedrock is weathered, however within a relatively shallow depth (on the <br />order of 2 to 3 feet) the material is judged to be hard and relatively intact. The <br />bedrock consisted of flat-lying interlayered beds of sandstone, siltstone and shale. <br />The bedrock dip appeared relatively horizontal, average dips of coal seam in the area <br />are on the order of 1 to 2 degrees based upon geologic reports for the site included <br />in the permit documents. <br />We obtained 4 bulk samples at the P3 portal. The samples consisted of shale <br />from the test pit, 2 samples of representative spoil/backfill material from the <br />excavated test pit, and 1 sample of the natural alluvial soil from the near the toe of <br />the proposed portal fill area. <br />LORENCITO COAL COMPANY, LLC <br />CTLrt 25,661 Q <br />
