0
• CONSTRUCTION RECOMMENDATIONS
We recommend the portal areas be reclaimed by placing and compacting the
excavated material using conventional earthmoving operations. We recommend
compaction to at least 90 percent of standard Proctor maximum dry density. The
moisture content of the material is not considered critical, sufficient moisture should
be available to achieve compaction. It would be preferable to place the backfill
material at or below optimum moisture content to reduce settlement and increase the
strength of the compacted material. The material can be compacted using wheel-
rolling with heavy equipment orself-propelled compactors. Depending upon the type
of equipment utilized, we believe compaction should be applied to layers on the
order of 8 to 12 inches in thickness. As material is placed and compacted against the
back cut slope, small benches on the order of 1 to 2 feet should be cut into the back
slope to key the fill into the native soils and bedrock.
• LIMITATIONS
The analyses and conclusions presented in this report are for the conditions
described in the report. Variations in conditions are always possible. We believe this
study was performed using methods and procedures consistent with other
professionals practicing geotechnical engineering in this area at this time. No other
warranty, express or implied, is made.
It has been our pleasure to serve you on this project. If we can clarify our
opinions or be of further service in discussing the contents of this report, please call.
•
(See following page for additional signatures)
9
LORENCITO COAL COMPANY, LLC
CTL/T 25,863
