weather, and has been badly rutted by drivers attempting to use it in wet weather. It climbs a
steep hillside about a quarter mile west of Route 115 along a narrow shelf barely wide enough
for two vehicles. The road has several blind curves, one of which is located on the steep shelf
portion where gravel trucks would have difficulty stopping. In short, the quarry seems to pose a
significant risk of conflict with recreational use of the area, as well as a possible safety hazard.
We are also concerned that despite widespread public interest in the Table Mountain
wildlife area, public notice of the proposed operation has been very limited. Landowners on
Barrett Road to the north of the site were notified by means of a public notice placed on the set
of public mailboxes outside the Mountaindale Campground, and may have received additional
notice, but the only notice posted in the wildlife area itself was posted at the proposed quarry site
itself, at the end of a 3-mile road passable oily in dry weather. During a normal winter, very few
people would even have been able to drive to the site to see the notice. I saw no public notice at
the entrance [o the wildlife area, even though a public bulletin board has been placed there
describing the wildlife area regulations and use restrictions. Many regular users of the azea
would never even have seen the notice. Although I have hiked in the Table Mountain area at
least a dozen times over the past year, I had hiked either along the north slope of Table Mountain
or in the southern portion south of the gypsum mine. Until yesterday, March 21 st, I had not
visited the quarry site in more than a year, and visited it in this occasion only to see if there were
any public notices providing further information about the proposed quarry. These comments are
being submitted by fax because I learned of the proposed quarry only about ten days ago, which
did not leave me with adequate time to prepare and send a written letter. These comments are
being followed by a written and signed copy postmarked on this date.
We hope that the Division of Minerals and Geology will determine whether these issues
can be adequately addressed before it permits operation of the proposed quarry.
Sincerely,
<.
awes E.
