Doc Date:12/1112001 <br />III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII <br />sss <br />S/G 2.8 HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCES <br />• 2.8.1 INTRODUCTION <br />The cultural and historical resources survev of the Edna Mine seas done in two <br />stages by two different groups. The first survey conducted in 1977 covered the <br />Federal leases within the Edna Mine permit. This survey was conducted by the <br />Colorado State University Laboratory of Public Archaeology. The second survey <br />conducted by the Grand River Institute in 197°-I°80 covered the remainder of the <br />Edna Mine permit area. It included not only a survey of archaeological sites but a <br />description of the history mine area and surrounding areas in northwest Colorado. <br />For brevity, the portions of Grand P,iver Institute study that covered the Pittsburg <br />~ Midway Coal Mining Co.'s proposed underground mines at Trout Creek and Fish <br />Creek has been deleted as has a long discussion of The history of the White River <br />Indian uprising. However, all those sections pertinent to the Edna Mine permit have <br />been included in this section of the permit application. <br />The two studies have been combined together into This section. The Grand River <br />Institute study covers Sections 2.8.2 through 2.8.7, and the Colorado University study <br />• covers Sections 2.8.8 through 2.8.12. The Grand River appendices are shown in <br />Section 2.8.13, appendices 2.8-A through 2.8-E; and the Celorado University study in <br />Section 2.8-13, appendix 2.8-F. Neither study found sites eligible for listing or now <br />listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the areas, to be mined. <br />However, the proposed Haybro historic district is adjacent to, and could possibly <br />include the Edna feline offices and coal loadout. Exhibit 2.8-I shows the area <br />surveyed as well as the location of sites and districts. <br />2.8.2 LITERATURE REVIEW <br />In order that sound evaluations of the significance of prefristoric and historic <br />sites identified during this survey could be made, an extensive literature search for <br />Oak Creek, South P,outt County and Northwestern Colorado was performed. The <br />following libraries were consulted: Buddy Werner Memorial Librar;,, Steamboat <br />Springs; Colorado Railroad Museum, Golden; Colorado State Historical Society, <br />Denver; Denver Public Librcry; Heiny Library, ~~1esa College, Grand Junction; Routt <br />County Historical Society (Steamboat Springs High School), Steamboat Springs; and <br />University of Colorado Library.
