The projects are as follows:
1. Mountain Parks Electric, Inc., has submitted an application to remove an existing
overhead power line which runs parallel to County Roads 3 & 30, and replace it with a
buried power line, to be located mostly along the shoulder of the two roads. The project
area begins at the Forest boundary in Section 3, Township 2 South, Range 78 West, 6`h
PM, Grand County, Colorado. The total length of line affected is approximately 7.7 miles
long, with 3.0 miles located on NFS lands; the remainder is on adjacent private lands.
Tap lines to the Keyser Creek Summer Home Group, the Wray Property and the
Ptarmigan Station would also be replaced with underground cable. The tap line to the
Ute Park Ranch would be rebuilt as overhead. Qwest has also proposed to install a new
telephone line within the same trench as the power line.
The existing line is approximately 50 years old, and runs through forests of dead lodge
pole pine. While much of this dead timber has been or will be harvested, replacement of
this line with an underground system will provide for a more secure and reliable power
source, that will not be affected by remaining trees or future stands of timber. Removal
of the overhead line will also reduce the potential for a wildfire being ignited by trees
_ falling in the line, or the line coming down onto the timber. Construction is expected to
begin late this summer, arid be completed in 2007. "
2. Grand County Road and Bridge (GCRB) has submitted an application to continue
operating the existing South Fork Gravel Pit, located on National Forest System Road
142, in Township 3 South, Range 77 West, Section 17, just south of the Henderson
Conveyor System. The South Fork Pit was previously operated under a Project
Agreement between the Forest Service and Grand County Commissioners between 1998
and 2000. The site is approximately 5.57 acres, and will not be expanded beyond what
has previously been designated as the pit area. No further trees will be removed.
Enclosed is a 2005 photo of the site. GCRB proposes to run gravel crushing operations
~5 ~ L"~
Caring for the Land and Serving People Prin~etl on Recycled Paper
