Mayo and Associates, LC
4.0 DESCRIPTION OF MINE INFLOWS
Groundwater inflows for the Soldier Creek Mine, PacifiCorp Mines, Crandall Canyon
Mine, Co-Op Mine, Skyline Mine and West Elk Mine aze summarized below. Soldier
Creek Mine is in the Book Cliffs, West Ells is in the Somerset Coat Field and the other
mines are in the Wasatch Plateau. The data and descriptions presented here are from
public domain documents.
3.1 Soldier Creek Mine (Book Cliffs, Utah)
Coal was mined from both the Rock Canyon and Sunnyside Seams (Figure 3) by means
of continuous mining methods, The mined portion of the Sunnyside Seam is associated
but not in contact with the Sunnyside Member of the Staz Point Sandstone. The Rock
Canyon Seam is located in a 150-foot thick layer of Blackhawk Formation between the
Sunnyside and Kenilworth tongues of the Star Point Sandstone. Irr the mine azea the
members of the Star Point Sandstone-have a cumulative maximum thickness of 230 feet.
Ground water entered the mine through three pathways (Mayo and Associates, 1996a):
1) roof inflows from sandstone channels in the Blackhawk Formation,
2) floor seeps, presumably from the Kenilworth Member of the Star Point
Sandstone, and
3) fault-related damage zones.
Mine personnel estimated that long-term mine inflows were as follows: roof drips ~ 80%,
floor seeps ~ 5%, and fault damage zone fracture flow ~15% (Spillman, 1995, 2004,
personal communication,). Roof drips from Blackhawk Formation sandstone channels
Evaluation of Potential Groundwater Inflows 22 February 24, 2004
Associated with E Seam Mining,
West Elk Mine, Somerset, Colorado
